Every school day begins with a safe ride. That's why Victoria ISD continues investing in transportation that helps students arrive at school safely, comfortably, and ready to learn.
As part of the district's continued investment in student safety, Victoria ISD has added eight new school buses to its transportation fleet for the 2026โ27 school year, including six general education buses and two specially equipped special education buses. All eight buses will begin serving students when school starts in August.
These buses feature some of the latest advancements in school transportation safety, including three-point seatbelts for every passenger and the driver, illuminated "School Bus" signs on the front and rear of the vehicle for greater visibility during low-light and inclement weather, illuminated stop arms to better alert surrounding traffic, and an Intellipark brake system designed to prevent accidental vehicle rollaway.
The addition of these buses is another important step in Victoria ISD's long-term plan to modernize its fleet while meeting new state safety requirements. During the 89th Texas Legislative Session, lawmakers approved Senate Bill 546, which requires all school buses to be equipped with three-point seatbelts for every passenger by September 1, 2029.
Since 2021, Victoria ISD has replaced at least six buses annually as part of a long-term fleet replacement plan to retire older buses that had exceeded their useful life and improve the reliability of student transportation. Following the passage of Senate Bill 546, the Board of Trustees recommended increasing that pace to seven to eight bus replacements each year to ensure the district meets the state's September 1, 2029, seatbelt requirement.
The eight new buses replace older vehicles that did not have three-point seatbelts. Additionally, one older bus with significant mechanical issues has been retired from service. As a result, the number of buses still needing replacement to meet the new state standard has decreased from 31 to 22.
The district has made significant progress in modernizing its fleet over the past five years. In 2021, approximately 75% of Victoria ISD's buses had exceeded their useful life, and only six buses were equipped with three-point seatbelts, and none of those were used on daily routes.
Today, only 35% of the fleet has exceeded its useful life, 47 buses are equipped with three-point seatbelts, and 37 of the district's 40 daily routes are now served by buses with three-point seatbelts.
Every improvement reflects Victoria ISD's commitment to placing students first by providing safer transportation, investing responsibly in district resources, and ensuring students arrive at school ready to learn. As the district continues replacing older buses over the next several years, families can expect continued investments that prioritize student safety and support every child's educational journey.
