Well kept food prepping area

Victoria ISD has been recognized with a Silver Turnip the Beet Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for its exceptional efforts in providing high-quality, nutritious meals to children during the summer of 2024.

The Turnip the Beet Award honors outstanding Summer Meal Program sponsors nationwide that go above and beyond to serve meals that are not only healthy but also appetizing and culturally appropriate. Victoria ISD was one of just 199 sponsors across the country—and one of only 57 in its category—to earn this prestigious recognition.

To qualify for the award, recipients must demonstrate excellence in areas such as offering a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; providing low-fat or fat-free dairy products; incorporating local foods; and ensuring that meals meet the cultural preferences of their communities.

“We are proud to be recognized on the national level for the quality of meals we provide to our students during the summer months,” said Dana Bigham, Child Nutrition Director. “This award is a reflection of our team’s commitment to ensuring children in our community stay nourished and ready to learn year-round.”

The Turnip the Beet Award was established by the USDA to celebrate Summer Meal Program sponsors who go the extra mile to make sure kids have access to high-quality meals when school is out. Nutritious summer meals play a critical role in supporting children’s growth and preparing them for a strong start to the new school year.

Victoria ISD’s participation in the Seamless Summer Option (SSO), part of the National School Lunch Program, allows the district to continue its mission of achieving excellence for all—one healthy meal at a time.
